INTRODUCTION

The Omasi La (5390m) trek is a lesser known trek in the Indian Himalayas. The trek begins from the village of Gulabgarh on the J&K - Himachal Border. The areas has been closed for many years after the insurgency began in Kashmir and it was only recently 2009 when we restarted exploring the area with some of our climbing trips to Kishtwar Shivling. The trek takes you into the lesser known Sumchan valley. We cross through the Sapphire and Emerald mines of King Zorawar Singh and eventually after crossing the pass end the trek at the village of Abring in the Zanskar Valley. The Umasi La also is the Southern entrance to Zanskar, situated at Great Himalayan Range in between Kishtwar and Zanskar. This trek offers one of the spectacular routes.

Setting off from Gulabgarh we follow a well define trail through Oak and conifer forest and pass numbers of beautiful villages with traditional Paddari home i.e. Garh, Kundel, Chishoti, Jashail etc. Crossing Machail the Buddhist culture starts to appear which has a close links with Zanskari for centuries. After Suncham we trek beneath the Kishtwar Shivling and camp in beautiful vast alpine meadows. All through the trek you will get amazing views of peaks like Kishtwar Shivling, Hagshu, Barnaj, Chiring, Nun, Kun etc.

Outer layer: A waterproof, breathable shell jacket and pants keep you dry and fend off wind.

Down feather jacket: - Can be used while relaxing or walking outside in the camp area.
