INTRODUCTION
The Zanskar Gravel Cycling Expedition is one of the most spectacular cycling journeys in the Indian Himalaya. Designed for adventurous riders seeking remote landscapes, challenging mountain roads and authentic cultural experiences, this expedition traverses the legendary route connecting Himachal Pradesh with the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Zanskar.
Beginning in the green valleys of Kullu, riders gradually acclimatize before crossing the historic Rohtang Pass and entering the dramatic landscapes of Lahaul. Following the Bhaga River upstream through traditional Himalayan villages, the route leaves the Manali–Leh Highway at Darcha and joins the newly opened Darcha–Padum Road.
The expedition then climbs deep into the Greater Himalaya, crossing the spectacular Shinkun La Pass (5,091 m), the gateway to Zanskar. Beyond the pass lies a world of sacred mountains, isolated villages, ancient monasteries and pristine river valleys that remain largely untouched by mass tourism.
Highlights include camping beneath the iconic peak of Gonbo Rangjon, exploring the world-famous Phuktal Monastery, visiting traditional Zanskari villages and experiencing the rich Buddhist culture that has flourished in this remote region for centuries.
The journey concludes with a spectacular drive from Padum to Leh along the recently completed Nimmu–Padum Road, one of the most scenic mountain roads in the Himalaya.
